Spirit Bear

Created during my undergrad, this experimental series of work began after working with Bone China. In firing bones in a kiln to create Bone Ash, which is the main ingredient in Bone China, I found that the bones will themselves glaze ceramic surfaces at high enough temperatures. These pieces marry clay and bones as I recreated the animal forms that would have been in place before decay. The piece with the Black Bear skull was photographed in the unfired stage, while the leg with the bear femur spent 20+ hours in the kiln, which brittled the bone and in turn created beautiful colours reminiscent of the Spirit Bears of the West Coast.
